What's WiFi module?


WiFi module, also called a serial port Wi-Fi module, falls under the IoT transmission layer. It converts serial port or TTL levels into an embedded module that complies with Wi-Fi wireless network communication standards, with a built-in IEEE 802.11b/g/n wireless network protocol stack and TCP/IP protocol stack.

Embedded Wi-Fi modules enable traditional hardware devices to connect directly to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and are key components for realizing IoT applications such as smart homes and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) communication.


Wi-Fi module PCBs can be divided into three categories:

  • General-Purpose Wi-Fi Module PCBs: Examples include the USB or SDIO interface modules on mobile phones, laptops, and tablets. Their Wi-Fi protocol stacks and drivers run on Android, Windows, and iOS systems, requiring a highly powerful CPU to support applications.

  • Router-Solution Wi-Fi Module PCBs: Typical examples are home routers. Their protocols and drivers operate on chips with ample flash memory and Linux systems.
  • Embedded Wi-Fi Module PCBs: They feature a 32-bit MCU, integrated Wi-Fi drivers and protocols, and use common MCU interfaces such as UART. They are suitable for various smart home and smart hardware products.
